Since the overturn of Roe vs Wade the rights of women and nonbinary servicemembers, veterans and their families have come squarely under attack. And the roll back of these rights will be a priority target for their opponents.

They are planning to remove the rights of women to receive gender-specific care and abortion health services, rip women out of combat roles in the military, prohibit women from being eligible for the draft, banning trans people and waging an aggressive, dangerous and all-out attack against the rights of LGBTQ+ service members, veterans and military families.

These attacks have had significant impacts on women and nonbinary service members, veterans and military families.

But we fought back. And we helped stop a number of key assaults and scored historic wins. Including a truly historic victory–pushing the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to finally drop its exclusionary, male-only motto to be more gender-inclusive in March 2022. As the Army Times noted, “The use of male-specific language in the original mission statement has long drawn criticism from veterans advocates who note that women veterans are the fastest growing cohort of the community, expected to make up one in every five living veterans in America by 2040.”

But the attacks continue. And they have already significantly weakened our overall national defense, and damaged military morale, readiness, recruiting and retention. See more here. These attacks haven’t only impacted women and nonbinary service members, they have impacted everyone in the military and veteran community and everything that we touch. And therefore, it has had an impact on all Americans. In addition, these unnecessary, unpopular and overtly political attacks have distracted our senior military leaders from their primary task of warfighting and protecting and defending our homeland and overseas interests and allies.

These impacts have been compounded by recent changes to policies at the Department of Veterans Affairs and to all branches of the military.

This is just the start and the culmination of a culture war on our military and veterans that’s been in the planning stages for a generation.

2025 has seen a full-spectrum attack on the equal rights of many different groups of people in our military and veterans community. From brave female fighter pilots, to expecting mother Marines, to innocent trans military kids, millions will experience an assault on their rights and healthcare services like we’ve never seen.

Operation Liberty is fighting back.

For our community, for our fellow troops and veterans, for our military kids, for the military we love, and for our national defense.

Operation Liberty is fighting back for all of us.

We are taking on the tip ofthe culture war spear that is now firmly focused on the Pentagon and VA.

Operation Liberty takes immediate, non-partisan action to minimize the harm, take care of our own, and plan for the future. As veterans and as citizens.

These are our most urgent strategic priorities for our service-members and veterans. We will fight in the media, online and in Congress. Some priorities may also potentially be achieved by executive, administrative, legal, and/or ballot measures. All options to accomplish them should be explored and exhausted by Congress, The President, The Department of Defense, The Department of Veterans Affairs, the courts, and the public.

We stand with our troops and veterans. We stand with America. We stand with liberty.

And we need you to stand with us.

This is what we recommend as a plan of action. This is what we are standing to fight for now:

1. For the active duty and reserve military, ensure immediate reproductive health care access for every single service member and family member connected to the Department of Defense.
Specifically, the DoD can and should take immediate action within its authority to protect to service members in the states that now have laws restricting access to abortion services.

2. For veterans, Department of Veterans Affairs must lift the ban on abortion services and counseling at the VA immediately.
Women and transgender veterans in all 50 states deserve equal and adequate access to the health care they’ve earned. The VA Secretary can and should exercise his current authority to make this happen immediately.

3. Codify Roe v Wade.
The right of every American woman to make decisions about her health care must be restored. Especially for those who have already put their life on the line for their country.

This list is by no means exhaustive. But these are the most urgent strategic priorities for our service-members and veterans. Some priorities may also potentially be achieved by executive, administrative, legal, and/or ballot measures. All options to accomplish them should be explored and exhausted by Congress, The President, The Department of Defense, The Department of Veterans Affairs, the courts, and the public.

UPDATE: We’ve already achieved one significant goal. In March 2022, we led a truly historic victory–pushing the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to finally drop its exclusionary, male-only motto to be more gender-inclusive. As the Army Times noted, “The use of male-specific language in the original mission statement has long drawn criticism from veterans advocates who note that women veterans are the fastest growing cohort of the community, expected to make up one in every five living veterans in America by 2040.”

We stand with our troops and veterans. We stand with America. We stand with liberty.
